Emerging Pet Photographer — Nicole St-Onge

Emerging Pet Photographer to Watch

Nicole St-Onge — NCS PET PHOTOGRAPHY

Windsor, Ontario

Last September we met pet photographer, Nicole St-Onge for the first time.  Immediately her enthusiastic and bubbly personality shines through, especially when discussing pet photography.  At NCS Pet Photography, Nicole welcomes all breeds of dogs, cats, and other small pocket pets like bunnies offering studio and on-location natural light sessions.  She is dedicated and passionate; creating beautiful portraits of your pets.  Nicole personally takes every step to make your experience an enjoyable one.

“When working with animals it’s a must to have patience.”.  Fido and Fluffy do not always sit still and smile pretty for the camera.” said Nicole.    She suggests using treats and noise makers waiting for that perfect expression.  “With a little patience you will usually capture something completely amazing.” Nicole shared.    Nicole”s advice for the anxious the pet-parent,  “You need to remind them that their pet is probably doing better than they think.”

Giving back to the community and helping homeless animals, Nicole denotes her time and talent photographing for local pet shelters.    ”They use my photographs to help give deserving pets a second chance.” Nicole shared.   Working with animal rescue inspires Nicole knowing that her photographs help animals find loving, forever homes.   NIcole is a proud member of HeARTs Speak, an organization of visual artists who volunteer time and resources to helping rescue and shelter animals.  NCS Pet Photography works with various animal rescue groups in the Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent areas.

Nicole’s Camera & Favorite Lens:  Nikon D90 camera, Nikon 24-70, 2.8 lens.

Nicole’s Post Processing tips:  ”For post processing, Photoshop and Lightroom are an utmost digital darkroom essential.  I often get asked which one I prefer.  The truth is you really need to have both if you’re going to be more efficient with your workflow and editing process.  In Lightroom the preset that I use the most often is OnOne.   I recommend using Purely Studio actions and Pure Seasons actions for Photoshop.”

Nicole is another one of our students from the September 2012 Chicago workshop.  There were many excellent images to choose from that Nicole shot during the workshop.   What caught my eye for this image is the dramatic lighting used.  The lighting Nicole set up makes the subject pop.  This ornate sofa could have overpowered the small dog. Well done Nicole!

Julie Bortolotti - I have seen Nicole in action when photographing animals and she has all the tricks to get the purr-fect shot. She is a very caring and generous person as well – donating her time and extreme talent to help raise funds for rescue organizations in our community. She definitely deserves this recognition!

Inspiring Dog Photographer to Watch – Amy Sandidge of Cactus Canine

 Professional Photographer – Amy Sandidge

Cactus Canine

Phoenix, Arizona

There is beauty everywhere in Southwest scenic landscape.  Amy Sandidge has a unique quality capturing the spirit and personality of the family pet, all in harmony with Arizona’s landscape as the backdrop.   During the hot summer months, Amy also offers contemporary, classic portrait sessions all in the cool comfort of her home studio.    Amy shared with us, “As a photographer I get giddy when I see great natural light!  Sounds silly, but all light is not created equal especially in the Arizona desert!”

Amy is one of the most sought after pet photographers in Arizona, specializing in dogs, horses and cats.  She takes great pride offering her clients beautiful, quality prints and products that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Amy, like so many pet photographers, donate their time and talent to different dog charities and rescue groups.  For the last several years Amy has photographed a calendar for the local Corgi rescue and the 2013 calendar was noted by Dogster as a top 10 holiday gift giving idea.

AZ Cactus Corgi Rescue

Amy’s photography tip:  “You have got know your style and have a vision that is yours.  What one photographer in Florida is doing may or may not work for someone in Kansas!  Know your equipment, to photograph animals in particular.  You need to be able to make adjustments on the fly without looking at the back of camera”.

Amy’s camera and favorite lens: Nikon D3s,     70-200mm f2.8 —  85mm f1.4  —  105mm f2.8

Amy’s Post Processing Tip:  “I started out using the ‘one-click’ actions and called it a wrap, but I have taken extensive photoshop classes and have learned how to edit using photoshop itself.  I learned to use layers and do different techniques on each layer to achieve great color, detail, and depth.  I also started experimenting with different modes and opacity.  I do have some of the Florabella actions and love them on the right image.  I hope to eventually develop some ‘dog-friendly’ actions for pet photographers.”

Amy attended the September Paw Print Divas workshop in Long Grove Illinois.  Kim & I were very impressed with her skills as a photographer, both using ambient light and in the studio.   We offer a large variety of dog models to work with.  Amy mastered her skills working with this bulldog in the studio.  Bulldogs are powerful and can have a mind of their own.

Rosemary Yeoman - Thank you for sharing and spotlighting Amy Sandidge’s photography. She is by far one of the best and she is innovative and very clever with the animals (and people). I enjoy her work greatly.

Workshop Announcement!

Paw Print Divas WORKSHOP

an exploration in the craft of artistic dog photography

April 11-14 2013 in Houston, Texas

$995 for the entire workshop (Business/Marketing Day & 3 full days of shooting and post processing)
or
$300 for the Business/Marketing Day
or
$850 for the 3 days of shooting and post processing

(Attendees must live outside of a 100 miles radius of Kim’s studio & a 50 miles radius of Barbara’s studio)

WHY Paw Print DIVAS…………..

Kim Hartz and Barbara Breitsameter will inspire and guide you through the exploration in the craft of artistic dog photography. For the serious amateur photographer to the seasoned professional photographer wanting to expand their business, this unique workshop will help you identify your personal style and expand your creative vision and artistic approach to dog photography.

The workshop will be held at Kim Hartz Photography home studio in Houston TX, and in an effort to keep it intimate and hands on, participants will be limited to 10 photographers.

The outdoor shooting locations will be announced a few weeks before the workshop.   You will learn lighting techniques to use in various lighting situations including outdoors, indoors in an actual home setting, and strobe lighting either in a studio setting or on-location.

This workshop will be offered in two segments:

Segment One is a Business & Marketing.   It is a one-day class focusing on Business and Marketing  for the Dog Photography Business Model.

Segment Two is an  intensive 3-day hands-on Dog Photography and  Post Processing  workshop all with an emphasis on the creative process.

We strongly encourage every attendee to enroll for both segments.

Many workshops spend the majority of time focusing on business and watching an instructor photograph.   Through our own experiences and teaching workshops, we have found that our students cannot wait to use the techniques taught during the demonstrations.  Therefore, we place a stronger emphasis on hands-on shooting and developing your style.

Greg Lynch - Dang it! I’ll be in Fredericksburg, VA at the Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac Specialty Show (the world’s largest Labs-only show) showing some dogs, taking some pics, drinking with friends from all over the world. I hope there’s a repeat of this – I would LOVE to come!
